The Black Lives Matter Movement started in 2013 in response to the acquittal of Trayvon Martin's murderer, George Zimmerman. Black Lives Matter is an ideological and political intervention in a world where Black lives are systematically and intentionally targeted for demise. It is an affirmation of Black folks' humanity, their contributions to the world, and their resilience in the face of deadly oppression. They are working for a world where Black lives are no longer systematically targeted for demise.
This website serves as a digestible roadmap into understanding what is the Black Lives Matter Movement. First meet the three women who started the movement, then travel the six year history of the movement divided into three components: goal of the movement within the year, political involvement, and celebrity input. Videos, photography and artwork e.g. political cartoons, are available to better understand the movement visually. A tribute wall is created to pay homage to the slain victims. If you would like to know more beyond the offerings of this website, a list of sources is attached to help you navigate the Black Lives Matter Movement.
